I usually just start playing. After a while, I usually hit upon something that sounds cool, and I play that until it's muscle memory. Then I try to figure out something else that sounds cool to me that I can put with it. After a few riffs or whatever that sound good to me, I'll go back and alter one or more of them a little bit.
And I too find that a couple of beers helps in playing. You get looser and less stressed. That, or weed.
