I work in an ice plant, bagging ice in a small North Carolina town, deep in the heart of the southern summer. I also load vendors, selling the sweet, sweet, tasteless and purified water, frozen into crystalline chunks and imprisoned in printed plastic bags with 16 pounds of their frigid brethren. I wear a Cursive hoody, boldly ornated with the keys of the Ugly Organ, nothing but a pair of Martha Stewart collection lime-green gardening gloves to protect my frozen paws. In a 28 degree metal box I dwell, bending and lifting in this infinite winter, endless bags to be placed on the mechanical menace that conveys them to their melted doom within the hands of a customer, day in, day out.

All in the name of chilled drinks and unspoilt foods.
