A court has ordered O.J. Simpson to give up royalties originating from a deal with 2K Sports’ All-Pro Football 2K8 to the family of stabbing victim Ron Goldman.
Reuters said in a Tuesday report that Goldman’s estate sought the videogame royalties in an effort to “to satisfy a $33.5 million judgment won against Simpson.”
Simpson stood accused of the 1994 stabbing murder of wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman. The court found him not guilty of criminal charges, but he lost in a 1997 civil suit that said he was legally responsible for the deaths of Simpson and Goldman [
the court system—go figure].
Since Electronic Arts has the exclusive rights to use NFL properties, Take-Two’s All-Pro Football 2K8 instead signed on nearly 250 former pro football players, placing them in fictional teams, uniforms, stadiums and the like.
As Simpson’s likeness is one of those used in the game, a judge said that Simpson must relinquish any earnings that "have been paid, are due or may be due in the future" from the game to the Goldman estate.
He’s also required to turn over documents regarding the Take-Two deal.
The Reuters report points out that All-Pro Football has a team called the “Assassins,” which sports a knife-wielding mascot. The news report pointed to footage from GameTrailers which had Simpson playing for the Assassins.
Next-Gen found the trailer referenced, which is called “Slashing the Defense.”
Simpson doesn’t have to be on the Assassins team, as the game is customizable. Take-Two told Reuters that the game is “not specifically associated with O.J. Simpson, and the game does not promote any such connection."
