Just got home from the hospital.
My dad had quadruple bypass surgery this morning (they thought it would only be triple) at 7 am, and was pretty much out cold until about noon. The surgery went well and without any problems, and when I visited at 3:30 he was awake and talking, albiet with some discomfort, but he was still making jokes. They thought he would have to have the breathing tube in his throat until tomarrow, but as of 3:30 he already had it out and was breathing just fine with an oxygen mask. His voice is very raspy from the tube and he really wants to drink some water, but the anesthetic they used slowed down the parystalsis in his stomach so he could drink a gallon of water and still be thirsty. They're giving him icecubes one at a time so he can get hydration from that (the nurse is calling him Iceman).
He drifts in and out of sleep every couple minutes, so having a real conversation is tough, but at least he's getting sleep. He's expected to make a full recovery within a couple months, and is expected to be out of the hospital by Saturday (which is a couple days ahead of the original plan). The nurse told us that he was one of the best patients she'd ever had, that he was taking big breaths and fighting quite hard and that she was very proud of him. I feel the same way.
I have to say a giant thank you to everyone who wished him luck or offered up prayers, he is really doing well and was appreciative of all the get well remarks. I'll continue with updates if anything changes or when he's out, but as of now he's doing really well and probobly sleeping, the only hard part for him now is wanting to drink some water and eat a steak.
Oh and I dunno if I mentioned this earlier but apparently tests revealed that somewhere between 5 years ago and one month ago he had a very big heart attack which was the driving cause behind this small one. At the time his body was in such good shape that it went unnoticed by his doctors and any of us, probobly even by him. That coupled with the fact that his father had 4 heart attacks and died in his arms on the last one has me a bit worried about when I'll get my first. But I'm not really thinking about that now, I'm all smiles today.
