I don't believe the news.
I keep upgrading the custom firmwares because I don't want to lose the ability to use emulators, yet I've not used an emulator on it in over a year.
The PSP is far from worthless fresh from the box.

Most of the "good" games on the PSP are shoddy PS1 ports. Which thanks to custom firmware I can put on the PSP myself for free.

What the fuck are you talking about? There isn't a PS1 port in the top 20 PSP games, while the best DS game for about 6 months was a port of an N64 game.

PSP is pretty nice right now. I don't need yet another console to emulate on so I am fine with staying with the official firmware. They just added the custom themes too which are pretty swanky. I love my DS but the PSP is a very nice handheld as well.
