Thread: Official Car Thread :: Vol 2 :: Now with More Bikes!

  1. I don't think I've ever seen an outback on the course, but it's AWD, so that at least counts for something.

Apparently there's this thing called PAX time in autocross, which is like a handicapped system of evaluating a driver's overall ability compared to other drivers in faster cars. Basically, it calculates the fastest lap time of every driver as if they were all driving the same car. I did pretty well considering I'm still a rookie. I beat the BR-Z and some tricked out 700 hp mustang. I also won my class (G Stock) on Sunday. I'm going to level 1 autocross school in a couple weeks to learn the basics so I can improve and get faster.

it sits dead at my parents house because some cunt couldn't get off her phone long enough to make a right hand turn. She hit it just so that the part where the right fender mounts to the frame, curled up under the light. It will probably cost me 1500-2000 to fix and I could buy another probe for that.

I just get fucking disgusted every time I think about it.

I have A lot of fun with mine (had?) While there's no Turbo, it seems like I got a good one that's not sluggish like some of the other cars I test drove when looking for this one.

I'm still deciding if I should mess with the clearance to make it lower and go for a 'rice rocket' approach, or maybe go and add a few inches of lift and have a funny looking offroader that would leave people here scratching their heads.

I would probably opt to lower it only because I've seen some really slick outbacks from my year, I'd like to try my own spin on it.

  4. If you're not an experienced autocrosser, I would keep your car in stock as much as possible until you get better. Modifications will affect which class you drive in. If you're a greenhorn like me and trick out your car before really knowing what to do with it on the track, you will get smoked. You'd probably get put in one of the modifed or street prepared classes (which have good drivers).

Here's the 2012 SCCA rule book which goes over the requirements for each class (give it some time to load, it's a .pdf). You can make some modifications and still stay in a stock class. For example, for G Stock (my class) I can upgrade my shocks, use r-comps (racing compound) tires and install a rear sway bar, and I would still remain in my class. Once I start tinkering with the engine, start changing the exhaust, I'm no longer in G Stock.

BTW, I have a set of Star Specs on my car and I don't think I'll ever buy another street tire again. Well, except for snow tires/all seasons since Star Specs DO NOT like cold weather.

So it's not just cosmetic damage?

I had a 97 Probe too. Got a bunch of shit from friends for driving a Probe but it was the best handling car I've ever owned. Mazdas are good at handling.

  6. Yeah, they handle great. They hug the road in a turn incredibly well, considering how under powered the engine compared to other cars that handle as well.

It was also great for haling gear. I could fit a 6 x 10 speaker cab in the back without even converting the back seat.

Yeah. The part of the frame under the light is fucked and the part of the frame where the right hand fender mounts is fucked. I need someone to grind off the welds for that whole part and weld in a new one. I don't see anyone doing that for less than 500-750. Then you factor in getting the whole front repainted.

    Stupid cunt.

    Get off your phones, dumbasses.

  7. Finished level 1 autocross school today. In addition to the basics, I learned some of the finer points of cornering and it paid off in the last run. For experienced drivers, it should take 53-58 seconds to finish the .7 mi course. I finished it in 60.3 seconds, which was within 3 seconds of my instructor. Pretty proud of myself. Level 2 is next where they put you through more drills (i.e., slalom), but that will have to wait until next year.

Oh, I also saw another BR-Z on the course. Looked good. With a good driver, that car will give people fits.

Double Oh, that 14-year old kid I previously posted videos of was at the school. Good kid. Extremely talented. No lie, he could've been an instructor if it was needed. Saw him on the course after our session was over and saw a future Indy or F1 driver. It's nuts. It's like seeing Mario Andretti or some other famous race car driver before anyone knows who they are.

  8. Finally got a new(ish) car.

1992 Crown Vic LX. Only 30,000 miles on it.

Car is mostly immaculate. It has spent the past 20 years in a garage. It needs some little old age fixes. Driver's side window doesn't work. Driver's seat won't push up. Front and rear bumper have paint dings in them.

Crazy low mileage. Never wrecked. Spent its whole life in a garage in the south. Interior looks new.

There are people who would go absolutely nuts over that, seriously. I don't get it, but buying up Crown Vics and giving them crazy paint jobs and huge rims is a thing around here right now.

    How is that possible?
