Get your score multiplier up to 9 by bulling as fast as possible, and keep it up there for the remainder of the round by not dying. Once it's at 9, keep bulling the crap out of enemies for maximum score.
One big bull run is way more effective than a bunch of small ones too. Also, stick to the left of the play field - enemies first go right when they hit the rim, which gives you more time to let enemies build up before bulling.
The restart bonus thing was used in Gridrunner++. All the previous Tempest games had restart bonuses (and other Atari arcade games - they called it the skill step system), but they were set amounts and not based on your score for the level.
It was broken in the original Tempest, where level bonuses were often much greater than what you would have at that point if you played up to and finished that level normally.
Has anyone tried that MadCatz controller with the spinner on this yet? On the 360 degree levels I keep getting hung up, expecting to need to move the stick in a circle. I know that spinner isn't very good, but I'm hoping it will do until I build a proper spinner. Of course, it might not work at all. Anyone tried it?
Last week one of the local Targets had the controller marked down from $40 to $33, and since Monday is markdown day for electronics I'm hoping tonight it will be a little lower. Worst case I get a few XBLA games and parts for a better controller.
I'm relatively sure you need to beat the first 100 levels to access Super Ox Mode. Not sure yet, seeing as I'm still in the 30s, but I think that's how it goes.
