Thread: Anyone know anything about audio for video?

  1. Anyone know anything about audio for video?

I'm in the market for a decent shotgun mic. Granted I would be going from XLR to 1/8" input on my camcorder. I want something that I am going to be able tp use with mixers and camcorders that do have XLR inputs. I would prefer not to spend over $300 on the mic itself.

My two choices that seem to be decent are:

    and

My main uses would be interviews as well as audio for shor films and documentaries.

Both are pretty good mics, but for features I'd go with the AT. First off, it operates in a wider phantom power voltage range, so you have less to worry about if you are using the crappy camera phantom-power. As long as you keep fresh batteries on hand you don't need to worry about this though. I like the low rolloff @ 80hz also. It will help cut down on wind and handling noise (and annoying stuff like dump trucks driving by). No one needs 80hz and below for interviews or doc work. You can filter it off later if you like in post, but for a shotgun mic I'd rather have the rolloff there in the first place.

You can listen to audio samples of both here http://dvcreators.net/shotgun-shootout/#. The AT is a bit brighter, and certainly more sibilant as a result, whereas the Rode is a bit warmer sounding. I'd like to hear them in a real world situation before I picked one up, although I know we don't always have that luxury.
