    Dammit.

  2. Hellsing is probably the only thing on the list that I was considering checking out. So...yeah...sucks for that. Anyone if its getting subbed yet or by who?

    This fucking sucks.
How is Black Lagoon BTW? From the Wiki it seems really cool...

  4. FUNimation Acquires Geneon Back Catalog

FUNimation has formally announced its acquisition of distribution rights to a large portion of Geneon USA’s former stable of anime titles. The first releases will hit store shelves as early as the end of this summer.

    FUNimation’s acquisition includes:

Black Lagoon & Black Lagoon Second Barrage
    Elemental Gelade
    Ergo Proxy
The Familiar of Zero (Zero no Tsukaima)
    Fate/Stay Night
    Hellsing Ultimate
    Kamichu
    Karin
    Kyo Kara Maoh Season 2
    The Law of Ueki
    Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
    Ninja Vixens (live action)
    Paradise Kiss
Rozen Maiden & Rozen Maiden Traumend
    Shakugan no Shana
    Shonen Onmyouji
    The Story of Saiunkoku
    When They Cry

It’s particularly notable that the FUNimation acquisition doesn’t include any of the Tenchi Muyo anime despite FUNimation presently distributing two of the Tenchi series.

  5. They also didn't acquire the rights to the second series/Secret of Mamo movie of Lupin the Third despite Funi themselves releasing ten of the franchise's movies/TV specials.

  6. I'm just waiting for ADV to go public with their dibilitating losses.

  7. Oh, I love you, Funi. Thank you so much.

And, yeah, ADV is hitting the shitcan, too. In this corner, Funimation ALSO takes on 30 of ADV's former titles. In the other corner, ADV discontinues four series mid-release schedule.

Just so we understand, this means ADV loses and Funi gains these:

    # 009-1
    # Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy
    # Air Gear
    # Air movie
    # Air TV
    # Blade of the Phantom Master
    # Comic Party: Revolution
    # Coyote Ragtime Show
    # Devil May Cry
    # Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor TV
    # Jing, King of Bandits: Seventh Heaven
    # Jinki:Extend
    # Kanon
    # Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora (once titled as Shattered Angels by ADV Films)
    # Le Chevalier D'Eon
    # Magikano
    # Moeyo Ken TV
    # Moonlight Mile
    # Murder Princess
    # Nerima Daikon Brothers
    # Pani Poni Dash!
    # Project Blue Earth SOS
    # Pumpkin Scissors
    # Red Garden
    # Sgt. Keroro 1st & 2nd
    # Tokyo Majin
    # UFO Princess Valkyrie
    # Utawarerumono
    # Venus Versus Virus
    # The Wallflower
    # Welcome to the NHK
    # Xenosaga

...and ADV just has no clue what's to happen to these:
    • Shattered Angels
    • Kanon
    • Tokyo Majin
    • Welcome to the N.H.K.

In my opinions, this is good. The anime industry is finally leveling out, as the people with the best business sense prevail. ADV and Geneon have always been stupid with money. From what I understand, Geneon actually handled their entire, US anime industry behind their parent company's back. They were just THROWING money at things with no thought. Geneon only ever went under when their Japanese overlords woke up and told them to fuck off.

ADV enjoyed some success, but is hemorrhaging licenses now due to their lack of money. I'm not sure if they are still trying to fund that Eva movie, but if so that and Newtype are probably to blame.

Bandai Visual recently folded, undoubtedly due to not being able to sell a single fucking thing because of stupid decisions like these. $50 for 4 episodes of Galaxy Angel Rune is probably the single most senseless idea I've ever heard. It's okay, though! Bandai Entertainment absorbed all of their assets into their new Honneamise label. Unfortunately (for them), THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME FUCKING PRICES THAT MADE BANDAI VISUAL FOLD IN THE FIRST PLACE!

    CPM is just dead.

This leaves us with the following:
    • Funimation owns the rights to every anime and every home movie you've ever made. They deserve it, too.
    • Viz is still the US arm of Shogakugan and Shueisha, at this point. It's a given that any new properties either own in Japan will carry over to America now.
    • Media Blasters continues to distribute massive amounts of porn and uses that dirty money to nab awesome licenses like GaoGaiGar, Tweeny Witches, and Frankenstein vs. Baragorn for me to buy.
    • Bandai Entertainment not only still releases a few awesome shows a year, but now they're letting their stupid, older brother with the get-rich-quick schemes sleep on the sofa in the basement.
    • Manga Entertainment seems to be getting along far better than they did. They went from ruining Fist of the North Star to merely slighting Karas. An acquisition by Starz and a few, decent American properties seem to be helping them along, too.
Urban Vision is still around. I think. They still hold their old rights and seem to only be concentrating on Asian cinema, at the moment.
    • ADV is on life support.
These guys make the US Bobobo.

Funny how so much has changed over the years, eh? At the end of it all, I think Funi and Media Blasters are going to be the only two, companies still trucking along the same way they do currently. Considering Funimation is owned by Navarre, maybe Media Blasters will be the only little guy left. The rest of these groups are either releasing a few titles at most or are US branches of Japanese companies. Of course, the big, anime bubble is just about ready to burst, in my opinion. Let's see what happens.

UPDATE: A friend of mine went to Anime Expo and heard some former ADV convention staff say that the company is pretty much dead. So, that's that.

  9. I did forget about them! I think it was because they lost the rights to Arcadia of My Youth and I cried it out of my memory.

I really wanted to see that...
