Geneon (probably) gone

Something big is going down with Geneon today. They just announced that any title they had set for release after November 6th has been cancelled, and any orders placed today by retailers is a final order, and cannot be returned.

If you cared about any of the following... well, sucks to be you. Best bet is to hope for another company to pick it up, or for the online fansub community to consider it free reign again.

On August 24, 2007, it was announced by ICV2 that ADV Films will handle distribution, marketing and sales of Geneon properties on October 1. Geneon, however, will still be able to acquire, license and produce anime in North America, but everything else will be handled by ADV.


On September 20, 2007, the Anime News Network broke news that the distribution deal between ADV and Geneon has been canceled. It is currently unknown what will happen to Geneon's current titles, though all of the lesser titles may be discontinued.


On September 21, 2007, Dentsu confirmed the distribution deal as canceled through a press release, no details were given other than Geneon and ADV were "unable to reach a mutual agreement." and that "From October 1, 2007, Geneon USA will focus mainly on management of its works portfolio."

There's no question about if it's true or not: Anime on DVD has a scan of the official letter from Geneon stating as much.

What seems to be up in the air now is to what degree Geneon will still be around. Some things I read seem to say that they'll still be publishing to some degree, but this time only things that are directly from them, or publishing for a different company instead of being a licensing company themselves. What exactly is going on is still a bit tough to figure out, though.

This is pretty depressing. I'm not going to die over it, but they had a lot of good titles. I hope some how titles like Hellsing Ultimate will get complete releases. I also agree with the cheap box sets thing. I only buy right away what I think are 1st tier titles, anything after that I'll pick up a cheap box set.
