Have you bought the camcorder? I think the Canon HV20 is a good choice. I find that a recent deal for it is only $839. You can check it out if you need it.

I haven't bought it yet.... going to buy it very soon.

  2. Thanks for all the help, I got the camcorder last night. Ended up getting the Sony HDR-CX7. It can do 1080p and records to memory stick. I just didn't want to deal with tapes so I just have to transfer the files to computer and back them up.

The videos look great as long as there is sufficient lighting. In dim lighting, the video becomes grainy, but I know this is an inherent problem and I don't plan to shoot anything in dim lighting anyway (homemade porn should be fully lighted for viewers).

  3. It actualy does 1080i, not 1080p, but it still does look incredible. I'm just curious as to how much time in HD a 1gig mem stick han hold.

  4. Probably none. In every camera I've researched, memory cards are just for pictures and pictures can only be saved to memory cards.

    Corporate collusion FTL.

You are right, 1080i. They are saving the 1080p for next year, bastards.

For the 4 gig, I think the stick can hold 140 minutes (or 100 minutes? gotta look up the instruction booklet). So divide that by 4 = not enough time.

It would definately be nice to only have to pay for 1-2 memory sticks and never have to pay for any other storage again, unlike with tapes, but I guess it really comes down to your needs. Seeing as there are a lot of times I will be shooting for longer than 2 sticks could handle, plus I like to keep the hard copies seeing as video is a HDD rape, I like the tapes. It is a shame that Sony's HDR models claim Full HD, yet they are only 1080i. I believe your model does support 720p as well which is nice as my HDR HC7 only supports either 1080i or (i think) 480p. But you would be hard pressed to notice a major difference with the 1080i when watchin on a 1080p TV. It does lose a ton of quality when there isn't enough lighting though.

Agreed, I am going to get an 8 gig stick when it is alittle cheaper. If you are shooting that much, tapes make perfect sense. I am using it mostly to capture my soon to be here baby's precious moments, I can just archive the vids on DVDs.

Do you use Vegas to edit AVCHD? Or do you use another program (convert, etc)?

My HDR HC7 captures SD as AVI and HDV as MPEG2, so I wouldn't know if Premiere Pro CS3 can edit AVCHD, I can quickly check if it edits AVC, as that is what PS3 Video 9 converts movies files to for PS3 playback, and will get back to you real soon.

  9. The awesome thing with the memory stick is that I can just take it out and put it in the PS3 to play the videos. Nothing to mess with.
