    Looks like that trademark/copyright bullshit they secured a while ago is coming to the games.

    with New Super Mario Bros. Wii this fall, players will be able to pause during a difficult level, let the game take over to complete the level, and press a button to resume playing.

    Legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto says the feature is tentatively called "demo play."

    "In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready. And yes, we're looking into this for future games." - Shigeru Miyamoto
    There is no defense for this.

    There is no point to play a game which plays itself for you. I don't care if it's optional, I don't care if you never use the feature.

    If Nintendo's vision of videogames is one in which the family gets together to play something, then what is wrong with encouraging the family to collectively overcome a videogame's challenge? What sense of accomplishment or satisfaction is there to get if you never have to earn it?

    Not only is Nintendo thinking about encouraging families to overcome videogame challenges, they're also thinking about the poor children without family members to help them along, god bless em'.

  8. What's funny to me is that Mario is already piss easy now as it is. That's OK, though, seeing as how the two best sellers this month were Wii Fit and EA Sports Active (both outselling the next game by more than inFamous' total sales).

    Nintendo has their userbase pegged and it's fun watching people on messageboards try to convince everyone else by parroting what daddy Reggie says that NINTENDO IS MAKING GAMES FOR EVERYONE despite the fact that they put more attention on something that monitors your heart rate.

    And before we get into the whole "BU BU HORROR GAMES WITH IT...IMAGINE"...I don't think any company (ESPECIALLY Nintendo) is willing to risk a lawsuit by making a game that attempts to affect your heart rate while you're not exercising.

    I couldn't find a single kiosk with the heart-rate thing in it at E3. I saw three for Sin & Punishment 2. But yeah, that auto-play feature is retarded.

  10. I think "Demo Play" is a great idea if done correctly by adding HUD indicators when it's being used (to verify replay cheats), there's a way to turn it off, and the casual crowd will buy into it.
    Then the developers can get back to making challenging games.

    What I don't get is why they'd go this far out of their way to 'innovate' and patent something when the solution the whole time was to add additional difficulty levels to first party games with care and effort. Why they still refuse to do that I'll never know.

    Otherwise, I felt burned by Galaxy and DS New Mario because of the near-absence of difficulty (sans the 1 8-bit sprite purple coin star that was fun). I won't be making the same mistake again until I hear how the 'demo play' plays out.
