If Nintendo's vision of videogames is one in which the family gets together to play something, then what is wrong with encouraging the family to collectively overcome a videogame's challenge? What sense of accomplishment or satisfaction is there to get if you never have to earn it?

They can still do that. What Nintendo is doing is addressing the vast number of people who get intimidated by this stuff and have neither the time nor inclination to learn it. Moms are not going to sit down and master Mario en-masse. It's a fantasy, it's just not going to happen. Not ever. And Nintendo knows this. So they can either sell those people something they can enjoy on their own terms, or they can stand on some weird principle nobody cares about...except apparently some guys on TNL who aren't even the target audience for Super Mario.

Expect way more of this, too. Nintendo throws the hardcore community bones like Punch Out & Metroid and they don't show up, bitching about HD or friends lists or some other silly thing that doesn't make any money - not money in Nintendo's terms - and then go buy Shoot Yet More Fucking Zombies 4: Revelations Evolution or whatever. I don't fault Nintendo at all for going the direction they are. It's gotten them rich as fuck and they get to swim around with naked Japanese schoolgirl porn stars in a pool filled with good-ass junmai daiginjo sake going "holy shit dude, we actually outsmarted the fuck out of Microsoft. High five!"

Which is not to say that money is some self-justifying rationale, but damn it man, these guys can afford to buy Arkansas, kick out all the buttcheeks people and rename it the Mushroom Kingdom just off the DS & Wii. Imagine if they keep this up for a couple of generations?

It is kind of odd that the people most vocal about Nintendo games not being hardcore enough are the same people that tear apart every "hardcore" Nintendo release for not being flashy enough. Hardcore gamers used to pride themselves on not caring about graphics and extraneous bullshit, as long as the gameplay was good. What happened?

I wasn't enthralled with having my Mario character go from stupid rock to stupid rock because I found a shard of a star. Then I waggle my mote collecting the star bits along the way.
