For that above statement about PS2 being better for the industry than the Wii - at the office I hear people talk about the Wii. People who don't normally play games. They are genuinely excited about and have fun with Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and those other games than are easily "love to hate". These people are not idiots either. They manage million-dollar deals and wrangle deadlines better than most Gamestop employees can handle a customer.
All this makes me think that, yeah, while the PS2 had the gamer's buffet, the Wii is actually expanding the market. However you'd like to view that is up to you, but it's not because the average "non-gamer" is some knuckle-dragging troll or bumfuck fool.
Which brings me to another thought - wasn't this what people were saying of the PS1? That it would ruin real gaming by making it cool and introducing people who didn't understand the older 16-bit and 8-bit eras? That platformers and 2D woiuld die in the wake of sports games and 3D?
And now the tables have turned, though the game is the same - now the sports-loving, GTA-playing, FPS enthusiast is afraid that "their" hobby is being intruded on by those who don't get it. Something tells me it'll be the same deal all over again - the market will expand for these new people and adapt, and the "hardcore" will become as niche as 2D, platformers, and all the 16-bit mainstays have.
