Homeowner's Associations

It has zero effect on property values, because home owner associations only really exist here in condos. Property in PR is at a premium due to limited space, and the bank doesn't take your neighbor's yard into account when your house is appraised. I've bought two houses here so far, and neighbors were never mentioned once. It's a non-factor here.

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. When you bought your houses, you probably would have chosen differently, if the would-be neighbor had an awful house that was an eye-sore.

You don't have to get to know your Neighboor's to know if their house is ugly as hell though.

I used to own a house in whitebread Crofton. My homeowners association was a real pain in the ass. Among many other things, they towed one of my cars because it didn't have a back license plate and I couldn't afford to get it out of the impound lot so I lost my car.

If I want to leave my garage door open all day, soak my driveway with oil, let my grass grow 12 inches high, line my entire roof with satellite dishes, and park my car on my lawn, I'll fucking do it. I'm not paying a few hundred thousand dollars for a house and a little patch of land and then dealing with that bullshit.

There was a news story about a gated community in NJ (I think, or Westchester/LI NY) where the HOA does not allow statues of "religious" implications on the lawn. So no virgin marys, no weirdo asian statues, etc. Old people were complaining but the president of HOA is not answering.

Wait wait wait, for a gated community, a home owners association I feel is a different situation. If you're going to lock yourself away from the rest of the world behind a gate, you're going to have to give up some freedoms. We have a home owner's association where I live but according to my dad they're not a big deal, the only thing they bug us about is there are gas lamps in front of all the houses and they ask my dad to turn them it on every night (They automatically turn on but he has it so it won't turn on heh).

I think it was a gated community, I caught the tail end of the broadcast. But all the old people were pissed because they have to remove the baby Jesus, Buddhas and assorted Marys off the lawn.

I guess it makes more sense in a ritzy gated community. You don't normally run into this shit in your average suburb, from what I've seen.
