Thread: Official PlayStation 3 Thread

  1. So I'm really close to purchasing a PS3, mostly as a BR player but also because I am interested in playing some of the exclusives when I can get them cheap. I was just at a friends house who recently purchased a BR player and was having problems playing some of the BR discs because he had a version 2 player and they were version 1 discs. WTF is that all about? Its not a cheap player by any means, its a nice Sony model. That seems really ignorant if its not a backwards compatible technology. Anyways the reason I brought it up here is because I am concerned about the PS3 becoming an outdated BR player. Is this possible or can it be updated?

The PS3 is the best BR player, in part, because it has the most frequent and easy firmware updates.

  3. So as it stands now, the PS3 can play all available BR discs? I figured it would have an advantage with internet connectivity but wanted to make sure. It really surprised me that a Sony standalone BR player didn't support all BR disc types.

I can't say that I've tried anywhere near every disc, but I have not had a problem or read about anyone else having one.

  5. Cool, thanks Yoshi.

every kind of BR. Ive not heard of a single problem of a PS3 not being able to play a movie.

AS for your friends player, was it a samsung? they currently have a lawsuit on them for selling buggy players and not firmware updating them fast enough to fix the issues.

Profile 1.0 players should have zero problems playing 1.1, and 2.0, they just wont have the PIP that 1.1 players would do, or internet content 2.0 players would.

edit: also PS3s are 2.0 profile ready, they are pretty future proof, but its not to say they are the ULTIMATE, as some audiophiles will argue its missing a few of the REALLY high profile audio codecs.

Like Yoshi said, the ease of firmware updates makes the PS3 the best BR player. I had a similar problem with my dad's Sony BR player a week ago. We were trying to watch Superbad and it wouldn't work. Finally crossed my mind to check if there were any firmware updates, and sure enough there were. What sucks about the standalone player, at least this model, is you have to dl the firmware, burn the ISO image to a DVD and then put it in the player and wait while it takes forever to run the update. Not a huge deal, but a bit more of a hassle then plugging it up to the internet ir just throwing the update on a flash drive and connecting it. Anyways, it now plays all BR's until there is some other big update.

  8. I passed the info along to guszapp, who is checking into the firmware update for his Sony BR player.

    Thanks

I am mildly interested in the game. I hope they do something to spice up the offline portion of the game instead of just collecting cars.
