PS3 tech question for anyone who may know: (this is with an original run 60 gig)
Lately my system has been turning off in the middle of playing Demon's Souls. Just one quick random beep and then it fucking dies like the house lost power or something, and the light turns a blinking red. At that point the controller and system will no longer respond until I get up, hold my finger over the power button on the console for a minute which resets it back to the normal "off" steady red light, at which point the controller magically works again to turn the system on. Usually happens between an hour and 3 hours into playing, hasn't ever done it while watching dvds or blu rays or while playing a game like Little Big Planet that is installed on the hard drive. I couldn't figure out what would be causing it so I called Sony tech support last night and after a short chat the guy said he doesn't know what it could be, so he suggested mailing it in for repair. He said that since it's an older model, the parts are more expensive yadda yadda, wants $130 for a general repair (it's obviously been out of warranty for years).

So the question would be has anyone else had something like this happen/heard of it elsewhere? And what course of action did you take if so? It's ultimately worth it for the blu-ray player and the one or two exclusives that I care about, but it's not like I wanted to drop $130 on a system I already own just because it decides to become sentient after a few hours and fuck up my demon slaying. At least the guy I talked to was genuinely nice and made me laugh a couple times, I was kinda salty after the system shit itself while I was mid boss fight...

I have had that very intermittently but nothing as consistent or correlated to a single game as you are describing. It's probably happened to me half a dozen times total. I would recommend letting it cool down before powering it back on and vacuuming all the vents to try to ensure it has the best airflow possible.

Sounds like overheating. Playing blu ray and playing games from the hd are less resource intensive so that may be why you have no issues when doing those. I see a ylod in your future. If you want, bring it in and I can have our guy look at it. I can promise it will be much cheaper than what Sony quoted you.

The latest update improved the web browser. It doesn't crash every 5 minutes anymore, and most sites look normal now.
