  2. I'm really not sure how I feel about Pac-Man DX CE. I wondered how it would work, with the very different mechanics. I get how it works now but... it isn't Pac-Man. The dynamics of being chased by the ghosts are all but gone now. It really isn't Pac-Man.

I don't like some of the changes (bombs? bullet time? was this really necessary?), and honestly I could probably deal with it -- I just wish it wasn't so overbearing. You end up with way too many bombs and while there is a small speed penalty for using them (and whatever time you lose waiting on the train).

You might want to add some actual good players.

You run out of bombs I guess.

I don't think I like the feature. It's pretty easy to get the bullet time activated even if you're not actually going to die. Hurts your score and makes everything all disjointed.

  4. The ghosts chasing you dynamic of Pac-Man is still there, they just add them in as you gain more points. I've had games with six of those bastards getting in the way of my pain train.

  5. Yeah, I feel like the bullet-time just prevents quick wrong-turn deaths so that you can feel proper-fucked when you become trapped between the snake and a loose ghost.

Kind of how I'm feeling right now. I mean, I loved Pac-Man CE. To a ridiculous degree. Utterly and completely loved it. What was great about CE was that it always felt like Pac-man. Yes, it was updated, and had some new concepts, but it was still Pac-man. It ended up exactly what it was: the true sequel to the original game. It gave modern sensibilities to the concept of Pac-man, yet was still fantastic in how it created so much depth gameplay-wise from a concept that was so simple.

DX is... it's something very enjoyable so far, but it just doesn't have that perfect mix of depth and simplicity that CE had for me. There's just always so much overload: so many game modes, so many choices to make, so many options, so many scores, so many game features, so many ghosts. Combos in CE were so satisfying because you had to see how long of a string you could put together off of only the standard four ghosts. It's like the fighting games where every hit you add to a combo you have to work for, versus the MvC-style gameplay where everybody has a 99-hit combo from one joystick command.

Not saying it's a bad game, because it is no way is. It's just, so far, that magic I felt with CE isn't there. If only I could somehow take DX's replays system and put it into CE though!

Are you kidding? I went back to N+ after Super Meat Boy and I wanted to throw the controller at the screen because the ninja controlled so horribly compared to Meat Boy. I might as well delete N+ from my hard drive because I'm never going to play that game again.

  9. I think the opposite. There's just something wonky about the character's (at least Meat Boy's) acceleration (especially combined with sticking to the wall). Maybe I'm not used to it, bt it's a little off to me. I still like it, but there are tricky jumps that I fail and I don't feel like I should be failing.
