So at work one of the employee's home computers died, the motherboard went out, and at the same time, his hard drive started....
the dreaded clicking. Which as I know, is generally a sign of it being dead, or on it's way out. I cannot seem to get the hard drive to show up in anything of sort, even with a self-boot CD It doesn't show, though I still may want to try Linux and see if that works better than this CD I'm using.
Any suggestions? The employee had pictures of his kid that he wanted to save, a couple thousand of em, so I'm trying to do what I can.
Yeah we have that, the problem is I think the HD is dead. But obviously paying the 3k for some recovery company to do it isn't ideal.
According the employee he has a clean room, any idea on what the process is of retrieving data from the disks? Do I get a similar hard drive and just swap the disks? That sounds... horrible.
If the actual drive mechanism is fucked then you might need to swap the platters into another drive, which you'd need a clean room and some skills to do, but if it's just a problem with the logic board then swapping the board with another from the same model HD should work.
Thanks, I'll have to see if I can find that, the guy has a clean room actually that is usuable, so honestly that'd be a fun thing to do, but wouldn't it require the exact same make/model of the HD?
The fact it makes the dreaded clicking sound leaves me to believe it's not the logic board, though I guess the board could very well have something that makes the clicking sound, but I always assumed that sound pervaded from the HD.
The logic board actually controls the mechanical components, so it could be either.
You'd need basically the same HD to swap parts with, although I would assume you could get away with something that's the same make, platter configuration, and capacity, and maybe different cache size or interface type.
Its the case of physical recovery, your hard drive has died (indication is clicking sound) only data recovery service will be able to recover your data.
Data recovery service is an expensive method of recovering data as it is done in Class 100 Clean Room.
For data recovery services you can send your hard drive to Stellar Information , data recovery service & software company.
They will analyze your hard drive free of cost and will send you the report on the basis of that you will able to know what data can be recovered and you will be charged according to that.
