Thread: I Found Something Interesting in the PS3 Warranty

  1. I Found Something Interesting in the PS3 Warranty

so I was perusing the PS3's warranty on sony's website, because I do that sort of thing for fun sometimes, and I noticed this:

THIS WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY IF THIS PRODUCT (A) IS USED WITH PRODUCTS THAT ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THIS PRODUCT; (B) IS USED FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES (INCLUDING RENTAL); (C) IS MODIFIED, OR TAMPERED WITH; (D) IS DAMAGED BY ACTS OF GOD, MISUSE, ABUSE, NEGLIGENCE, ACCIDENT, WEAR AND TEAR, UNREASONABLE USE, OR BY OTHER CAUSES UNRELATED TO DEFECTIVE MATERIALS OR WORKMANSHIP; (E) HAS HAD THE SERIAL NUMBER ALTERED, DEFACED OR REMOVED; OR (F) HAS HAD THE WARRANTY SEAL ON THE PS3TM SYSTEM ALTERED, DEFACED, OR REMOVED.
..and it made me do a double-take as I read that. Is this a common thing that one would find in a warranty, and if so, what would define an "act of god"? Isn't that kind of thing a bit ambiguous?

and what if i'm an atheist? Am I still bound to that term in the clause?

MK2 on XBLA plz - let the unfolding of gameplay begin!!

  2. "Act of God" is a catch-all phrase meaning things like a tornado hitting your house, power surge, earthquake, etc...i.e. "things that are neither your, Sony's, or anyone elses fault", typically natural events.

It is very common in warranties and is the legally accepted term for such things. A judge would laugh at you if you tried to argue what is basically semantics.

You've really never noticed this anywhere before?

  4. my PS3 has no such warning, and after speaking to a Sony rep, all acts of God are covered under my warranty.
You must have gone to Walmart and bought the 40 gig. I hear they've already stopped production of that (thus the warranty issues.)

And where is B-Ri with his answer to end all questions?

    ?????

every warranty comes with the "acts of god" clause. Its nothing specific to just the PS3.

  6. We really need to get this dark ages language out of our laws. Pretty much everything that phrase covers is scientifically understood.

And changing three words into a laundry list would be so much more efficient.

  9. You know what else counts as an act of god? Dust in the system.
