Thread: Soldier of Fortune Payback

  1. Soldier of Fortune Payback

I looked back through the first 4 pages and didn't see a thread for this, but really I'm not surprised. I just wanted to know if anyone has had a chance to try the game yet? I've always enjoyed SoF games, the Gold edition of 2 on PC had some of the best multiplayer I had ever played at the time. It was also the first game that made knifing someone in an FPS feel right, and I can't tell you how many games I won solely with throwing knives and slashes. Then there's the gore, which as always been fun. I just wanna know if it's worth picking up or waiting till someone brings in a used one to try out.

  2. Word is that it's not. It's a $20-30 game with a $60 price tag. And since there are so many shooters out now, it's a no brainer.
Graphics suck, AI sucks, level design sucks

  3. That's a shame.
And honestly I wasn't looking for it to pull me away from CoD4, but I do love seeing the updates that make to the damage models with each release. Shooting someone in the head in an online game and seeing a bloodspurt is fun, but shooting someone in the head and watching half of it fly off and blood spray everywhere is great.

  4. It's not as smooth as CoD4 in terms of framerate, and the level design does pale in comparison. Payback also steals the CoD/Halo health system instead of sticking to medpacks like the other SoFs, and there's some dumbass enemy AI. The leaning feature has been removed, too.

The gore is definitely there. After a machine gun fight with a few enemies, you're likely to find some dismemberment, blown off heads, etc. Enemies will still try to shoot you even after you've blown a leg off of them.

If this one were done by Raven, it would likely have been better. Nope, Cauldron made it. Payback doesn't seem to be as outstanding as the first two, and it's one I probably won't replay after finishing. This just might get traded in toward the purchase of F.E.A.R. Files.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)

  5. I played the hell out of Soldier of Fortune for Dreamcast.

I paid maybe $5 for it, however.

This is the kind of feedback I was looking for, thanks much. I knew when they came out that Fear would be a better game, but I've always had a place in my heart for SoF (if for nothing else than the gore), so I wanted to see it just for that. I'll most likely never pick either up, but as soon as the first used copy of each comes in, I'm making sure my 360 is at work and both of those bitches will get a workout.

That is until some *random ethnicity* person comes in and makes me pause it, at which point I will hate everyone again and most likely murder half of Rochester.

The DC port of SoF is a choppy clusterfuck. They could have done a much better job on it. Be glad you paid only $5.

  8. Oh man, I totally was. The graphics were dated, but the gunplay was totally fun. (I don't think I've had a PC that could handle a contemporary FPS at any point, ever).

  9. I'd hate to play an FPS on the DC controller. KB/M would be fine, though.

I tried playing Outriggers. It sucked ass with the pad.

  10. We used to play the hell out of 4 player Dreamcast Quake III at the school library between classes. We didn't know any better.
