Stating the obvious, the action is simply brilliant. And there is a lot of it. A shit ton of it. Bathroom fight, muddy yard fight, 2 machete man fights, porn peddler fight, warehouse fight...the list is huge. Bat Guy, Hammer Girl and Sickle Man are all awesome. The car chase is the best I've seen in recent memory. I think it's a successful sequel in pretty much every way. Gareth Evans is a hell of a film maker and knows what he's doing. He expanded Rama's world in all the right directions. It's much bigger than the first movie and while it runs over 2 hours it didn't drag.
I felt like this dragged so hard in the first 30 minutes I lost interest, then the first major fight scene in the mud was so painful to see the extras fake strangling each other that I shut it off.

  2. The movie gets better as it goes and eventually becomes pretty awesome (starting when the assassins go to work), but IMO it isn't quite as well-paced or intense as the original overall, despite most people going on and on about how it's the "best action movie ever." The generic story and several filler fight scenes early on (where one guy plows through gangs of unskilled opponents) didn't help.

I still enjoy the first Raid more.

  3. I tried to watch the Raid 2 tonight. I skipped around first to see the fight scenes, which were surprisingly hard to find. Sure is a lot of non-action in this one. I found them eventually and kinda piece together some context, but, couldn't really get past the mutilation aspect of the violence.

The first one had a few scenes that were on the edge of making me uncomfortable, but they were for punctuation and dramatic effect. And to be fair, something grisly like a knife fight is often tempered so severely for media, that people forget what an awful thing it is...so I give credit to Raid 1 for shocking some realism back in to what is essentially a fantasy martial art action movie.

Raid 2, however, just made me feel bad watching it. I already know that beating someone with a hammer is a grotesque brutality. I don't look forward to swordfights in movies to fill in the gaps of my imagination of what a sword can do to a body...I want to see something epic and of import translated through medieval combat. If you've ever seen people really fight for their life, it's a dirtying, soul-scathing experience, and the fights here sorta evoke that, albeit with a fancy martial arts gloss.

I understand the appeal, but it's not for me.

  4. I've heard Raid 2 described as "Superjail: The Movie", so I'm on board.

I really dug the first one, and those knife hits were brutal.

  5. "Superjail: The Movie" really isn't right, as only a small portion of it takes place in prison. It's more of a mob movie.

  6. Watched half of Snowpiercer last night and my stupid wife was too tired to finish it.

I thought the internet lied to me about it being an awesome movie for the first 20 minutes or so, but then it got really good. Classroom scene was amazing. Going to watch the rest tonight.

  7. Yeah, it starts off way too corny. Then it gets weird/good.

  8. I saw that Vice Guide to North Korea seeing it brought up here. Host is kind of a jackass but it was captivating in a way few things are. It's just incredible that place (barely) works as it is in the current day. I realized my mouth was agape at that gymnastics show.

I actually saw it this past weekend as well. Solid movie with some great performances but some of the "twists" nearing the end (like the train engine running out of spare parts so they use children small enough to fit inside to do the work manually) were kinda cheesy. Interesting ending, however, with the train crashing and basically wiping out humanity forever. I mean, the two kids who survived are fucked and I guess it's time for snow bears to take over the world.

And yeah, that classroom scene WAS amazing.
