Thread: Today's Random News

  1. Can’t. There’s proof of gender differences there. So obviously you can’t include it when trying to prove there are gender differences.

Unless you’re literally saying the nature of observing takes 2 people so any interaction is social. Which means you’ve undermined the whole concept of simple observation in the first place. The parameters for your own definition of observation would be so low I’d accuse you of you’re narrowing the potential outcomes to reach your own hypothesis. Which is poor scientific method.
By using dancing as an example (which is done very commonly across cultures, including our own, by both genders,) I am pretty sure you're really not examining this in any other framework but that in which you're comfortable with. You have a blatant non-interest in proving any points but those you can self affirm. I mean, that's fine - but it's not terribly scientific.

  3. Huh? I was purposefully using dance to illustrate some movements are socially instilled. That’s why I chose the most gender unspecific examples of movement as I could in the first place. Is lifting a box or pouring a glass of water socially constructed gendered motion?

Ok nice trolling. I’m seeing it now.

  5. Uhh just like in this thread right now. During this line of discussion. Very much not an Illuminati conspiracy.

It’s a loaded image. Also, I’d take the 100 image challenge worldwide edition. Some asshole would have to take all the pictures though, because they’d all have to be shot the same lit the same blah blah. No ears or eyebrows and everyone in soft focus.

I call tomfoolery on the sociologist and her blank slate

If there weren't really that many differences no one would transition. There wouldn't be hormone pills. Or boobs jobs or face bone shaving or hip implants etc. They'd just beleive gender was an illusion and transcend.

But they dont. In fact it really bothers some of them. To the point of suicide.

I have a feeling some of it is constructed and some of it is not.

    Yes and yes.

Physical labor like lifting is coded as masculine.

    Serving is coded as feminine.

I think it’s definitely a bit of both. Piaget demonstrated that extremely well (almost conclusively to the point where we can measure development stages in men and women). I just wanted to call some shenanigans on the diamorphism claim. I don’t think it’s been demonstrated as close to true, and any proposal to test it inevitably gets whittled down so much as to be leading and corruptive. The examples used to illustrate the point are always edge cases (where of course classification gets fuzzy, that’s why it’s at the edge).

If lifting boxes and pouring water are too prescriptive then maybe sitting in a chair or drawing some curtains. Most people would be able to discern men from women in most cases. And using photos I think is dishonest because it removes most of the senses we humans use to classify in the first place.

I suspect what’s going on is what Thaddeus was doing with Rogan—deconstructing the bounds of gender classification as a means to prove how silly prejudices are. But in doing that he loses some truth to fit a narrative he wants and it’s pretty apparent when you dig in to it—and he really doesn't need to lose that truth to make a good point about prejudice.
