That language is dumb. Perhaps I can shed some light on the problem because the costumes are only the tip of the iceberg, though.
- "Whites Only" parties
- "Blackface Only" parties
- "No Girls" parties (which, also, makes zero sense)
- "Asian stereotype" parties
- "Mexican stereotype" parties
And that's a smattering of the stuff that people are finally bringing up.
Here's the problem, be it a racist costume or party or whatever: When called out, the people say, "It's just a joke! Can't you take a joke?" When called out about how that's juvenile, they fall back to the "freedom of speech" thing, which causes stuff like said professor being surrounded by a crowd of agitated students.
Being asked to maybe be considerate and avoid racially insensitive costumes has nothing to do with freedom of speech. But I guess it's probably too much to hope that people who cannot comprehend the idea of "not being a dick" realize that fact.
Now all that said, there's definitely an aggressiveness in the protesting students that worries me.
EDIT: Also, my wife just had to watch a video about mass-shooting preparedness. Ugh.
