Thread: Today's Random News

  1. While that light speed stuff is awesome, this is incredible. First step to being able to record your dreams and play them back the next morning.

    BERKELEY — Imagine tapping into the mind of a coma patient, or watching one’s own dream on YouTube. With a cutting-edge blend of brain imaging and computer simulation, scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, are bringing these futuristic scenarios within reach.

    Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and computational models, UC Berkeley researchers have succeeded in decoding and reconstructing people’s dynamic visual experiences – in this case, watching Hollywood movie trailers.

    As yet, the technology can only reconstruct movie clips people have already viewed. However, the breakthrough paves the way for reproducing the movies inside our heads that no one else sees, such as dreams and memories, according to researchers.

    “This is a major leap toward reconstructing internal imagery,” said Professor Jack Gallant, a UC Berkeley neuroscientist and coauthor of the study published online today (Sept. 22) in the journal Current Biology. “We are opening a window into the movies in our minds.”

    The way they produce the video is fucking ingenious too;

    The left clip is a segment of the movie that the subject viewed while in the magnet. The right clip shows the reconstruction of this movie from brain activity measured using fMRI. The reconstruction was obtained using only each subject's brain activity and a library of 18 million seconds of random YouTube video. (In brief, the algorithm processes each of the 18 million clips through the brain model, and identifies the clips that would have produced brain activity as similar to the measured brain activity as possible. The clips used to fit the model, those used to test the model and those used to reconstruct the stimulus were entirely separate.) Brain activity was sampled every one second, and each one-second section of the viewed movie was reconstructed separately.
    So, so fucking cool. Science is kicking ass all over the shop today.

    It's 9 pages, but the first page is pretty much all you need to read to get an idea of how the whole article goes.
    Shocking news. One of the two places left in America where you can buy something has a dangerous pace and low pay. Who'd'a thunk that zero competition would do something like that?

    So, possibly, the speed of light isn't actually the limit on how fast matter can go. If that ends up being the case physics just changed forever.
    Yeah, they also didn't find the Higgs boson when they fired up the large hadron collider. That also fucks up the standard model. Back to the drawing board I guess.

  5. Oh, China.

    welcome to science

    Why do you even bother saying this garbage?

  8. Apple Predicts It's own Shit, 24 years ago

    This was a video made for an Apple Keynote speach in 1987 btw. With Siri being only on the Iphone 4S in a good money grabbing scheme, they announced it today. And there was a video a while ago which has a date stamp of September 16th, 2011 in it.

    So, 24 years ago, Apple predicted a complex natural-language voice assistant built into a touchscreen Apple device, and was less than a month off.
