But come on, this isn't one of the US's horned rats. Its a fucking lion. A lion that many people in its community loved.

Fe is correct. Thanks to huge, privately owned hunting ranches in Texas and shit, quite a few endangered species are making a comeback. Mr. Howell (ha!) and his buddies get to kill a rhino or whatever and the stupid amount of money they paid for the opportunity goes towards keeping several more alive. Unlike a zoo, the animals have a ton of land to live and move around on and so don't suffer from "we're captive and don't feel like fucking" syndrome.
