Standing Rock was completely justifiable nimby-ism dressed up as environmentalism in order to draw broader support.
Pale-face saw the natives as some sort of mystical forest elves with a magical connection to the land, when in reality it was just a community that didn't want to incur risk without reward.

That's a lot of it - the company doing the work didn't even consult the tribal council before it just bulldozed on in there. I'm 99% sure that if they would have humored the tribe by offering some sort of compensation originally, all this wouldn't have happened. I have full support behind the tribes who will be affected by this for their lives, but the white kids looking for a mindless cause that will dump and run as soon as it is perceived as a victory are nothing but exploiters themselves.

What can be done about it? Because the solution the city and state will probably come to is to crack down and eliminate the spaces, not force the owners to install enough fire exists or make sure the wiring is up to code for that many occupants. Then you've got increased demand and higher rents than now.

The reason the problem exists is that rent is so high in the area that people will take anything they can get. Getting a space compatable with making big art is otherwise impossible, so the broke kids make do due and pile up.

A music venue is whatever space will hold x amount of people, nevermind that the stairways are made of goddamn shipping pallets. Hell, I've played at extremely similar places.

On the plus side, a friend of my roommate's who was missing turned up! I think she was doing a trimming job up north.
