  3. I wouldn't argue I'm perfect, I definitely can think of a few incidents I handled poorly in the past. But I can say for certain I was never in a position of power over a woman and took advantage of that position.

    I think sometimes that the value of the person in their respective field can do more good than axing them immediately. With that said, it makes sense that Weiner is where he is, because he fucked up multiple times, and his punishment is deserved. But Franken? This was decades ago, the woman accepted his apology, he had a reputation as a clown, and has he offended since? I think we’re spending a lot of collective time prosecuting abusers via the court of internet that have LONG since settled down and more or less rehabilitated. I am assuming that our collective sense of outrage and justice is interested in rehabilitation, not just punishment, correct? If we are only interested in watching these men burn, and we cannot hope for rehabilitation, and we need to re-examine our sense of humanity. I do not condone the actions of abusers, but I also fundamentally believe that people can rehabilitate behavior that is usually reckless due to their own childhood trauma. By ostracizing very beneficial members of society (like Franken) due to a situation that happened decades ago, and did not involve coercive violence, and hasn’t occurred since.....we are doing ourselves a disservice.

    I’m very, very, very concerned that we as a society are getting very caught up in the weeds of outing abusers of decades past, and forgetting that we have some very real, very dangerous CURRENTLY abusive predators. We are dancing dangerously close to a cry wolf scenario that will set women back decades. In the way that CNN barely covers mass shootings that “only kill 3 or 4” these days, we will quickly tire of these women’s stories as they become less and less impactful.

    Additionally, I see an awful lot of privileged, white women using news and media as an outlet for their trauma - but statistics tell me that women are color are far more likely to be victims of rape and sexual assault. Many of these women will never have a voice, their trauma will never be broadcasted on CNN, and they are very unlikely to have the resources to receive proper counseling and treatment for a traumatic situation. I do NOT discount the experiences of the women speaking out, but I am very skeptical of a news media culture that celebrates trauma porn like these stories.

  7. I find it fatiguing. With every revealed scandal I lose my irritation with it — especially if it’s like 10 or more years ago.

    I mean... she admitted the kiss was consensual even though she felt harassed in to it. She said okay and she never communicated her feelings directly to him. You kind of have to do that for no to mean no.

    But the kiss + sleep grope? That’s a pretty simple pattern and narrative of sexual harassment.

    Franken does an aight job as a politician and this was 11 years ago. I don’t think there’s a broader upside to chasing him off with pitchforks unless there are more stories.

    I don’t think so. You've taken a very smart reasoned approach to this stuff. That’s not how mob rule works. Your note about white women is very astute.

    It’s the king/sacrifice narrative stoked by identity politics. We love watching high society achievers burn it all down. Britney Spears, Charlie Sheen, etc etc. Whether of not they rebound isn’t a priority. Wisdom of mobs and so forth.

  8. Ah, 11 years ago, my bad. I also get the feeling that the news is running with the Franken thing because it fits with the narrative of the past 2 days. Republicans are rapists?? so are democrats, lol!!! It keeps both sides watching every network so they can shake their fingers and moralize and tweet and post Facebook updates, and the trauma porn continues. It's an extremely detrimental vicious cycle, and I am not looking forward to the backlash that will result from this.

    I've mostly played by the rules that everyone believes in if only because of a strong sense of right and wrong and a touch of my own autism.

    I also have a higher sense of empathy than what might come through in text and if I picked up on disgust or otherwise was rejected the whole experience would turn to ash in my hands. I couldn't enjoy the sex or the kiss or whatever if it was cohersed.

    But that approach more times than not results in rejection. And many times I've felt ugly and wothless. Judged unfit.

    I don't know if all men are strong enough to look that in the face and walk forward.

    Perhaps some of what we see now is the poor reactions to these feelings of ugliness. That they will force what they want. But they don't understand what everyone here already knows: if you force it, you end up a 100 times uglier than you feel.
