You don't get it. They had slavery but geographic and political realities were going to doom it. That's why the South wanted to expand slavery into new territories, it's why they wanted laws along the lines of the Dred Scott decision. Things that were increasingly untenable not just to the North but the entire civilized world. If they didn't secede, they would have lost it in the normal political processes shortly thereafter. That's why they seceded. I mentioned this earlier in the thread.
Like I said, read what any prominent Southern politician said at the time of secession. Look at the CSA constitution or what the states put out to announce secession. They all mention slavery. Every last one of them. The idea that it wasn't about slavery defies belief.
You're coming at this as if the South started the war. Protecting slavery was clearly one of the key motivations of the South, but freeing the slaves was absolutely not why the North literally started the war.
The irony is that the liberals who are so offended by the Confederate flag today are de facto supporting the corporatism and colonialism they claim to abhor.

It was about States' Rights... States' Rights to have slaves and have their escaped slaves returned to them.
Oh and also States' Rights to make the new western states allow slavery, see the battleground that was Kansas.
