  1. Best way to convert vid files for Apple/Apple TV playback?

I'm looking to convert some TV shows and a few movies to put on a portable HDD to playback on my MBP for traveling. ATM I am jut converting MPEG2 files to MPEG4 using Videora Xbox360 converter. This seems to work ok, but I was wondering if there is a better way, and what exactly would be the best output format? Plain old MPEG4, AVC, H.264, etc.? Also, it needs to be able to run off of something like a passport HDD through USB. When I gave the MPEG4 a bitrate of 5Mbps, it was realy able to run too smoothly off of my 250gb WD HDD via USB, but at something like 768kbps it ran fine but looked like ass of course.

Mainly I just want some way to view the movies full screen off of a portable drive for when traveling.
