Some games even require 512 MB of storage to work with, even if they aren't themselves that big. Just get the HD
In a vacuum the Arcade isn't as gimped as it used to be, but because the difference in price of entry is smaller than it used to be as is the price for getting a HD, you should go all the way.
It's not that I don't have the money, but we're only getting one console and the wife wants a Wii. It's useful that the Arcade is $50 cheaper and not gimped like the Core. I can just buy a used 20g drive later.

So he can buy a Wii and let it collect dust? Unless he has a PC that can run modern games (and he doesn't have a PS3 according to his posting), I don't see much in the way of bad advice
It's like the gaming equivalent of a treadmill or whatever female exercise device of choice. People stop using it in 2 weeks after they've exhausted the catalog of worthwhile games for it.
