Thread: Disappering Car Door

  1. No, the entire side of the car is not being modified. The door is being modified -- and not even with respect to how it fits into the car. Then, basically, a "shelf" is being added underneath the car (out of sight) for the door to slide into.

What you're talking about would be fabricating new material onto the shell of the car to perfectly match, and seal -- remember, we can't have any leaks -- where the window frame used to be. Sure, this would be possible, but pretty far beyond the scope of the original folding door. Not to mention the end result would probably look really weird, especially with the door down.

Are you looking at a different dissapearing door?

Right. For about a 0.01% increase of the total cost of this otherwise huge and extensive modification.

    That's the whole point!

Word on the street is that if you add chrome rims to you car the end result looks very chrome-ish around the wheel area. Shock!

  3. BMW did it too. Say hello to the Z1.

I think you're grossly overestimating the cost and labor involved in this mod.

I was saying the window frame of the door would look weird, now pasted onto the shell of the car.

However, I was looking at my car at lunch, and I'm going to backpedal a bit. The best approach would probably be able to hack off the top half of the existing door, then weld that into the roofline of the car. A good shop could likely pull that off without too much hassle. At .01% the cost of the rest of the modification, though? I don't think so.

  6. I'm still curious if they have any backup system so that in an accident you aren't trapped by 2 immovable doors as you die in your exploding vehicle :/.

Backup system = window + heel of your foot

Thats not as easy as it seems, unless you're wearing high heels or something pointy. dont forget the inside of the window is curved against you and pretty damn strong.

When your life is on the line, I'm sure you'll be able to man-up enough and get the job done.
