True.
GM also has a problem with product image. GM and Ford make/made a ton of money off of replacement parts, because of the way they've made their vehicles; They aren't made to last for the long haul, and American car manufacturers have relied too much on the consumer replacing the product every 3-5 years, or getting raped by their service department for repairs.

Hi Daddy Warbuck$
Hi D_N_G.
GM's been turning around for the past five years or so, but sadly it takes about that long for a product to come to fruition. We're just now seeing some of GM's new world-beater products appearing--C6 Corvette, Cadillac CTS, Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G8.
They've got some very good products but now need to tackle the public image hurdle. Stuff like...
...isn't really true. American build and interior quality was pretty lax 5-10 years ago, but actual reliability wasn't any worse than anything else. The build and interior quality points are definitely being addressed in new products from GM. My relatively modern GM car has better interior than any other car in its approximate class.
I definitely think GM's on the turnaround, and while they may lose even more market share to vanilla Toyota in the next year or so, I see them taking it back. They already did will for January '08.
