I'm tired of seeing men walk around New York City in nice suits with hideous shoes. Just because your shoes are black does not mean they cannot use a cleaning and a polish at least once a week. If you're a hipster I get looking dirty is the new grunge but your shoes won't last long and the leather will wear out. You don't even have to polish the shoes but you can put a coat of wax on the leather to make it last for years.

So if any of you have shoes and don't properly take care of them, here's a little guide.

1.) Rotate your shoes. If you have more than one pair of shoes you should rotate them. At least three pairs of shoes makes maintenance pretty easy. If you only have one nice pair of shoes (like I do) and wear them every day, it's obnoxious to keep up with cleaning them. I recommend doing the cleaning process after every third wear your shoes get.

2.) Clean the gunk off your shoe with a small, soft-bristle brush and a clean rag. This preps the shoe for a coat of wax/polish. You don't want any hairs or gunk under the wax since it can ruin the leather.

3.) Apply a small coat of wax onto the shoe. I like to do small circular motions on the shoe with a small rag. Do this until you've polished the entire shoe. Remove your shoe laces so you get an even coat.

4.) With a larger brush, stroke the shoe back and forth. This will make the polish shine. If you want an even brighter shine, apply another coat of polish after your first brushing. This is for high-ballers. Let your shoes dry for a while and they should be ready to wear in the morning.

Remember to buy wax that matches the color of your shoe. I don't own a pair of black shoes anymore. I use brown. And there are many shades of brown. If you're in the same boat I suggest going to Kiwi's website and using their color chart to match the color of your shoe to the wax.
