Have you tried safe mode?
When you boot it up, it goes to the password screen. After you do that, it says explorer has performed an illegal operation and dies. I've done scans and all of the troubleshooting stuff to no avail. I haven't had a chance to really mess with it yet, so I'm gonna sit down and tackle it this weekend and see if there's anything that can be done.
I'm usually pretty good with this sort of thing, but if any of you guys have had similar things happen or have any advice, please share![]()
Have you tried safe mode?
Not yet, but that's the first thing I will be doing when I get home tonight.
Yeah if it works there it could be a number of corruptions, you may want to do a system restore to a previous moment and you might fix it.
If safe mode fails too then it's officially dead, but I think you'll just want to backup your data and reformat.
I'll be fine with it as long as I can retrieve the files on the hard drive. It just sucks, but it was bound to happen.![]()
What do you mean by "dies?" Shuts off, power cycles, the program freezes up, Windows freezes up, goes to a black screen while the power light remains on, etc.?Odds are your hard drive is fine and Windows has gotten fucked, which means your earlier idea of hooking it up to another PC should work just fine. It still boots up and there's no weird sounds so I'm willing to bet all your data is there. You could probably even pick up a USB external case and just pop it in for quick easy use.I've done scans and all of the troubleshooting stuff to no avail. Do you have a Windows CD? If so there are a few things you can do to try and find out if there are any issues with the hard drive and possibly even do a Windows repair.
By dies I mean freezes up and does nothing. Just sits there until I power it off.
You may have a couple bad sectors but yeah, the hard drive should still be in overall good condition and easy to rescue stuff off of.
Which is more than I can say for the hard drive I had to deal with yesterday, that one's heading off to a data recovery service. Even freezing it overnight didn't do shit.
