Thread: What's Bugging You Today? Volume 3, Part 1

  1. What is the word I can use to describe myself as someone who believes men and women are completely equal, and wants to leave it at that?

    Rational.

  3. I first saw that as "radical" and think you should use that instead.

Men and women aren't equal. People aren't equal. But they should be treated that way.

We aren't gods just yet. Our ability to size people up is pretty laughable.

We are close enough that it isn't worth my time to consider elsewise.

  8. My son turned two last Sunday and his 24 month check-up was the next day. He's still very undersized (1 percentile) for his age and despite the fact that he had appeared to us to have gotten taller and gained some weight, it was much smaller than we thought (only something like 1-3 pounds in the past 6 months). He's the same size as most children who are 8-12 months younger than him. He started off small and had a scheduled birth because of fear of complications resulting from his complete lack of growth in the final weeks of the pregnancy. While he was considered to be "full-term" (I believe he was born at 38 1/2 to 39 1/2 weeks) he was the size of a typical premature baby and didn't even tip the scale at 5 pounds (4 pounds and 11 ounces) after he was born. He did make some steady progress after he was born (he was on a special diet consisting of both breastfeeding and formula feeding) up until the time of his 1st birthday, his growth seemed to slow after that and he lost the gains he made on the percentile growth chart to end up back where he started in terms of relative growth compared to his age group.

Most of our biggest concerns dating back to the original 20 week ultrasound (where it was first shown that he was not as big as he should have been and his growth had slowed) have shown to not be the issue (organ problems, "dwarfism", physical deformities, etc.) but there is something causing his growth to be stunted. He did have a birth defect where his umbilical cord didn't properly form and was missing a blood vessel but it's apparently quite common and another couple we are friends with had a baby with the same birth defect but was born at a normal size. The doctors are unsure if it had anything to do with his growth inside the womb. His prior blood-work didn't show any causes for concern but they are doing a new round of blood work to try and determine if a lack of certain nutrients or hormones is the culprit. He is also scheduled to see a specialist soon that will further help determine if and what the problem is and if it can be corrected.

There are a variety of health problems that can cause a child's growth to be stunted such as hypothyroidism and low amounts of growth hormone but he doesn't seem to have any other of those symptoms except for his growth itself. It is unlikely that he is just genetically a small person as my wife and I are both above 5'9 but I suppose that is possible. I've had a very fast metabolism for most of my life (that has slowed down a bit as I'm approaching 30) and often struggled to keep on weight when I was younger because of it, but my height was never affected and I grew normally as a small child. One thing I read about was that some children (especially those born at a low birth weight not due to other issues such as smoking, fetal alcohol, etc.) tend to be behind their peers when it comes to growth and also tend to go through puberty at a later age than is normal. These children generally continue to have significant growth spurts after their peers growth has dramatically slowed or stopped altogether. My hope is that is something that may describe my son.

Fortunately, despite his problems with his growth; he is extremely healthy otherwise (which has also made it harder for the doctors to figure out what the cause is). He has had only one significant illness since he was born and has seemed otherwise very strong and energetic. He has hit the majority of his mental development milestones before the time when it is expected for babies and toddlers to hit them and he seems to be pretty athletic. He can already hold simple conversations and can do other stuff like shoot a basketball through a hoop (for kids of course) and can even throw an actual baseball about 10 feet or so if he gets a good throw. I've taken him out for walks before where he's literally walked 2-3 miles without needing to be picked up. He still has a bad temper (that seems to be far worse when my wife is around) but he listens to me pretty well and likes to play with other kids.

  9. It sounds like the stunted growth isn't necessarily a problem. Being at the narrow edge of the bell curve isn't always a bad thing.
