I will definitely buy Pokemon Conquest day one. It looks fabbo. I thought it would be out on Sunday and was a little bummed when my local Gamestop didn't have it

I was surprised how in-demand this game is. I finally got it a few days ago and it's not bad!

It's easy to start - each pokemon has one attack and one ability that triggers under certain circumstances. Layouts are like FF Tactics as well as movement, combat, positioning (back attacks are the best). Then the pokemon flavor of this-beats-that comes into play...

Then it starts to get a little more interesting. I'm only an hour in but there's no leveling - just a "link" system. The more a pokemon fights with a warlord, the more this link increases which in turn improves the pokemon states. Depending on the warlord/pokemon pairing, the link will max out at a certain point, with there being one "perfect" pair for each warlord/pokemon that allows the highest leveling.

Catching them is kinda reverse-pokemon. You can't take wild ones into your army, but can get warlords and their pokemon to join you. However the condition to accomplish it is strict - you have to beat that pair in under 4 turns, with a crit, or do it before anyone on your team takes damage. Makes for an interesting mix up.

I feel like there's still a lot of stuff I'm not wrapping my head around just yet. Stuff like rival nations invading your conquered territory, or warlord special abilities and how those are used best...but it's fun! On combat, it's way less complicated than FFT so far, but then all these added elements of like invasions, captures, etc. adds into it. I also keep reading the real game doesn't start up until after the story is complete, so one hour in is hardly enough to know how deep the game gets. But I'm digging it!

It's a fun game for sure, but the horrible UI is eroding my enthusiasm. It takes forever to shift troops around and there is no way to sort your warrior list by anything other than name, strength, location, or Poke Man. If I could sort by wisdom, charisma, and please, please, please elemental affinity, my turn preparation time would be halved. It sucks when you see a new pokemon in the wild, want a good link candidate for it, and have no choice but to view EVERY WARRIOR'S PROFILE ONE AT A TIME to find one.

I started off really liking the game, but I'm enjoying it less and less as I play it more. As ARBM said, the UI is terrible. Battles are also really really easy. The AI never seems to invade unless you've left a place completely undefended, and it's never a challenge to re-take a location.

Speaking of UI issies, is there any way to tell the element of a wild Pokemon before you enter a battle? It seems to me that you just have to memorize what pokemon are represented by what icons, and what their elements are. You can't even enter a battle, check the element, and then reload, because that randomizes the pokemon and trainers at each location.

The icons are the only way, but those are adequate. There is a key to them hiding under a few menus: hit Y to bring up the List screen when at the main map, then hit X to search by type. Voila.

Another nice part about the Y menu is that you can check the stats and affinities of the wild trainers to see if they're worth pursuing.

It's okay. Pretty cute anyway. Choc'bo Mysterious Dungeon on Wii (and Playstation for that matter) is better, but you said you'd never play a piece of shit like that.
