Thread: The Official Manga thread

Yeah. What I've seen of the Bobobo manga looks like something out of a mini-comic that you'd expect most publishers to reject. Considering it's the most popular magazine out there, Shonen Jump is actually decent about getting artists that deviate from the norm*, not in the same way an indy anthology would, but since it's so popular it also largely defines what manga is supposed to look like for a lot of people.

Also I never had any problem following Otomo's action scenes either. The only things that ever confused me were some of the quick transitions in Domu during the cops' investigation in the first half of the book, but that was cleared up once I realized what he was doing.

Hey, I forgot that was coming! I got a taste of Parasyte in MixxZine years and years ago and really liked it. Always wanted to read more. How far have they released in the US?

And yeah, I agree with you on Blade of the Immortal. I absolutely loved the series when I was younger, but I never even read up to the tenth volume because of the prices on those small TPBs. I can see the prices Dark Horse charges when I was buying color volumes of Hellboy with glossy pages, but on Blade it seems a bit ridiculous.

I wish the Shonen Jump Slam Dunk was available already. Fucking printing a preview near the end of last year then saying "COMING SEPTEMBER 2008!" I was dying to read more even when Raijin was still running.

  3. Has the series been finished in the US yet?
It wrapped up around last july I want to say.
Beautiful art and some fantastic "frozen moment" scenes.
I agree with this for surethat page where Tetsuo got his arm blown off was fantastic.
I also have an issue with most anime from manga because a lot of series tend to standardize the art
What's up shonen jump? Seriously One Piece is the only series running in it now with any original art.
The other night I saw a brief clip of the Death Note anime on Cartoon Network or whatever and if it hadn't been for L being on-screen I would've had no clue what it was, it looked just like 50 other random series.
This is my biggest contention with anime adaptations, D.Gray-man is another offender. Since the art was one of the It's few saving graces.
the fight scenes in the Berserk anime pale in comparision to the manga,
This is one of the worst I can think of, since some of those fights are just a joke. I can't comment on Naruto or Bleach because I've read to little of the Naruto manga and seen so little of the bleach anime.

About Parasyte, I think the first two volumes are amazing. But so little is resolved by the end it's almost painful.

  4. <3 One Piece

Stick with Parasyte, it tells a complete and satisfying story that handles its characters in a much more mature way than most manga could dream of.

Oh I've read the whole thing, and I think they wrap up the character plot lines nicley. They never resolve the over arching mystery of the parasites themselves though. And that was my main contention with the series.

why did we let this thread die?

The last manga I read was one of the Getter robos. I think it was the originals. Pretty epic and crazy. Evil Robot dinosaurs. Zombies made of dead people and salamanders. Crazy shit.

I want to read the old astro boy manga now that I beat the gba game.

I was going to make a seperate thread for this, but I figure this one can be used for it.

I was going to list manga artist that I like and why. I had actually made a long post but TNL ate it, so whateva.

    ANYWAY

    RAITA

This is the guy that did the art design behind valkyria Chronicles. If you think the art in the game was great, you should see his other stuff. The guy is a detail junky. The amount of detail he puts into clothes, weapons, and mechanical design is nuts. He also takes the time to put bone and muscle structure into what he draws. In some weird way a lot of his art reminds me of concept art for the dark crystal and the labyrinth. My only gripe with him is that probably 50% of his work borders on child porn. This is made even worse by the fact that his characters are so detailed. If you stumble upon some if it, it is not ambiguous like "lol, 18 year olds dressed in little dresses." No, its pretty obvious what it is. So if you do go googling, find a list of his works and look at the covers first. Oh japan, you band of rascals.

  8. Neat! The military fetishism reminds me of Shirow.

    Katsuhisa Kigitsu

This is the guy that writes Franken Fran. Shit, I love Franken Fran. It is kind of like a horror mystery dark comedy medical manga. I love the bizarre stories. Though there are a few characters that are stereotypically Japanese, the manga tries to stay realistic in style most of the time. Fran and her sisters are about the only characters that are super "anime"ish.
