Thread: Dog Training :: Tips and Tricks

  1. I don't want to give the impression that he is a misbehaving dog. He is really well behaved already, and is just starting to do a few things that I'd like to stop rather than tolerate. He barks at the door maybe twice a day, not all the time.

The dog looks at me as the boss right now. Due to the owner's work she had to be out of town this weekend, so I have been around the dog the most. It's not ideal, but couldn't be avoided. Part of the reason I am working with him now and looking at all this stuff is to help her keep him in control once she takes over more. I am more worried about her spoiling him than I am about his own current misbehavior.

The shelter said he is 2 years old, but he was a stray so no one knows. We are getting the feeling he is a little younger than that. He is a little awkward and uncoordinated physically.

  2. Also, take the dog for walks/runs as often as you can, ideally twice a day, but once a day is good too.

No matter how much you work with the dog, if another person "takes over" and isn't consistent with corrections/rewards and spoils the dog, you are pretty much wasting your time.

    All IMO of course.

I am absolutely aware of this, and it's the main reason I am getting this structure in the house now. I'm going to make her follow it. I will suggest she take him to an obedience class too.

The dog will be somewhat spoiled no matter what. These are girls, they want the dog sleeping in their bed and laying on the couch cuddling with them. That's why girls get dogs.

  4. Dogs and children and are all inherently good... it's their owners that fuck them up.

  5. Ok, I'm going to go with a water and vinegar squirt gun for punishments.

I will also try Drewbacca's onion trick for begging, that sounds like a good one. The new one doesn't need it yet but the older dog in the house could use it.

  6. If it makes you feel better Nemo, that picture of you I love posting, it brings me smiles from the deepest depression.

Way to punish the dog for your own shortcomings in training.

wtf, i just asked for training help, and was told i had to "negatively correct the dog". This is the training. If you have another way that is all happy sunshine land for puppies please tell me.

I am sick of all this bullshit where everyone says everyone else is wrong yet never says what is right. That's what I really learned about dog training the last 3 days.

  9. All you have to do is give a strong verbal correction when the dog does that. If that doesn't work, then do training with him by putting something extra enticing on the table and treating him (training treats, several times over a few minutes) for not getting into it. Back the treats off after a while to eventually zero. Either way is going to take time and consistency.

The water/vinegar thing is the equivalent of a rolled up newspaper, imo.
