Funny thing is I wouldn't get a credit card til I could afford it. Same with a car loan. I'm even willing to waiting on buying anything that takes borrowing until my student loans are paid. Then again I've always held onto this belief of personal responsibility - people tell me of the loopholes for dodging and avoiding debt repayment and I think "if it's something I took, it's something to give back."
Then when I hear people complaining about government wanting to help Wall Street, not Main Street, it makes me mad. Why do they paint it in such a broad concept of underdog vs. evil capitalism when Main Street is also full of over-opportunistic fools who are now feeling the sting of their irresponsibility? If you theoretically want banks to pay for their abuses, then shouldn't all abusers be held accountable?
I completely agree. I wrote it either here or in the Whats Buggin You thread about this fat, lazy chick I work with. Boyfriend already filed for bankruptcy and they bought two brand new vehicles and a $165k house. She gets $1600/month in alamony and child support and has decided to work here 2 hours a day if we're lucky. The bf told her to file for bankruptcy as well. But, the system lets them do it. All the while, her 350+ lb ass works as little as possible.
Blah, my friend (who's really looking for work) is getting unemployment, which almost matches my monthly income (minus a few hundred). Now when I think of that it's easy to see some opportunists take advantage of the system and the system allowing for it. Then when asked why it's so busted people declare that there just needs to be more funding for it, because heaven forbid people make less than the most I've made in my life so far!
Unemployment insurance is based on what you personally pay into it, man. The worst your doing is taking your own tax dollars back. Your friend collected more because your friend paid more into the system. It's the same as if you just saved up for a rainy day, but the government does it for you because it'd be a problem if we left people to do that completely on their own. It can't really be abused to the detriment of society.
We do shit like government based insurance because people are dumb and the impact to society as a whole would be alievated by government action. Same with social security and other welfare programs.
We do shit like this because the majority will benefit from it in the long run, but no one wants to pay for it because they all think they're a minority.
It's always good to have backup plans, because the rug can be pulled out from under your feet at any moment without warning.
They don't have to be good backup plans, you just have to have one.
For some people on this site who know who they are though, the only way they'll endure tough economic times is if there's a nuclear holocaust or zombie apocolypse.

The newest revision of the bailout did extremely well with the Senate tonight, I watched a good number of speeches leading up to the vote and it seemed significantly more well-received by both parties than the prior drafts. Barring another Hurtfeelingsgate on Friday's House vote, looks like it'll probably go through.
Obama, McCain, and Biden all voted for it, for what that's worth.
