I totally understand what an expensive pain in the ass it is... but in the end it would be an even more expensive pain in the ass trying to fight some asshole in court, trying to take credit for your work, without concrete proof the work is yours. I guess one wouldn't go copy writing every little thing they do but just the work that is ready to be displayed... and to solve the problem of your non copy-written material being stolen, put it away someplace nobody will see it until you get it copy-written.
Advocate, I got it from the second I walked in this thread... although more tricky for visual artists, anything I perform live wouldn't be performed live unless it was copy written through the state. Also I never did the "mail it to yourself" method, I always thought that was a weak way to protect your work... nothing is free.
