Take it to an Advance Auto/Autozone/whatever and get them to check your engine code to see what the exact problem is. They will normally do it for free.
Then, do a search on the net. Engine codes can be somewhat cryptic, but chances are several people have the same car, with the same code, and wrote down what they had to do to fix it.
This is all assuming you have a 96 or newer car. If you have an older car just find some shady place and slip the guy a $50 to pass you.

haha, that's because it has a microchip in it and scans that or if you don't have a tag we take 3 photos of every car that goes through and 80 isn't fast enough. Also hello other Austin person
