I think it's just hard to market a vehicle that's not capable of traveling competently on the main arteries of the road system.
I don't see what harm it would do in the midwest and south east where there is tons of under 60 two lane roads

whats there to market?
"hey grandma! go to the grocery store for 50 cents again!, just stay off the highway"
"Sorry grandma, your car sucks too much to see your children the next state over."
it really hurts me inside to even begin to believe that the people of this board are too stupid to get from state to state without a highway
I'm trying really hard to not think that, but a lot of you seem to be implying it.
I can get all the way from Tishomingo MS, to Atlanta on two lanes under 65 driving.
Have none of you changed your driving habits since the increase in gas cost? Or do all of you still drive the same +70 roads to get to work so you can bitch about paying too much for gas?
"rumble rumble I hate high gas prices blah blah blah but I refuse to change"

highway = best gas mileage. As for the "too stupid for state to state travel"...I don't know what to say that. People will take as straight a route to their destination as possible. Highway vs whatever the fuck is a broad generalization, options are different for everyone in the country.
And yeah, I have changed the way I drive, but not the routes.
the average car gets its best gas mileage at 60 mph, so I don't know how you can say that the highway is the best gas mileage.

Slow down. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, cars are most fuel efficient (gas consumed vs. distance travelled) around 55 mph, since air grows exponentially denser above 60-65, in the aerodynamic sense (Air resistance goes up as the square of velocity). Engines are most efficient at your car's minimum speed in it's highest gear, since this provides the best "speed per RPM" ratio. Drive as efficiently as the speed limit and road conditions will allow. If you are too pokey in town, you will end up sitting at every stop light, which wastes gas: Idle cars are 0% fuel efficient (zero distance travelled).

Yeah man, around here you're only doing 60 mph on highways. Do that anywhere else and your ass is getting pulled over. The road system where you live is much different than where I live. There are sections of the Turnpike, for example, where the limit is 65. Most people do treat that as 70 though. Either way, those speeds are highway only.
I've had friends who have moved to Virginia and North Dakota and say how awesome it is to have little traffic on long roads where they can whip down to the grocery store at 60 mph. It takes them 15 minutes to get there at that speed. It takes me 4 minutes at 45 since I'm in the suburbs. Much different area. My grandmother lives in upstate NY where you can drive like that, but people still drive like maniacs where your 60 isn't fast enough for them so they go around you on single lane roads.
I was going 60 today on a backroad, I got passed by a guy doing at least 100 mph. He passed a sheriff and got pulled over. In this state that's a 6 point offense (reckless op)
Funny part is that the road I was going 60 on is marked for 45, so he saved me a ticket.
