Trouble with Steam/hl2.exe on Vista.

So, I tried to play TF2 during the free weekend, and the program just kept crashing after flickering between a black screen and the desktop at various resolutions, so I uninstalled it.

Now I'm having the same problem with the games that came with the latest nvidia graphics drivers, specifically Portal.

Everything after the Valve logo is a colossal clusterfuck and I can't figure out why.

Has anyone here had similar issues, and if so, how did you deal with it?

I haven't been able to play TF2 since the first content patch.

I got the games to work, finally.
Hitting escape during the valve logo movie seems to be a reliable workaround.
