Thread: Jiu Jitsu is for everybody!

    Jiu Jitsu is for everybody!

I'm getting tired of talking about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the MMA and workout threads. MMA wouldn't exist if it wasn't for jiu jitsu and the only valid reason to work out is to become more kickass at jiu jitsu.

And HAY! Let's talk about judo, sambo, wrestling (the awesome real kind) and any other sort of grappling sport/art in here. WHY NOT?

So the most recent radical thing I did with jiu jitsu was a good will mission to Yakima, Washington. Our old friend Matt Hughes (not that one) has owned a TKD school out there for years. He wanted to spice things up with some BJJ and imported himself two Gracie Barra blackbelts from Brazil. Cristiano Oliveira and current women's world champion (in a weightclass for tiny people), Miriam Cerqueira. We walked in and I was pleasantly surprised to already know Cristiano from my trips to the Pan Ams. Miriam was wearing her GB gi with a whitebelt on taking a TKD class. I thought she was just a local Mexican girl from looking at her. Anyhow we were early so after the TKD class was off the mat we rolled with Cristiano, Miriam and each other to put on a little show for all of their two week fresh start newbies. Miriam's gi game is outta control and she accidentally choked my professor's girlfriend unconscious within the first ten minutes. Class was sweet and Cristiano had us doing great big ippon seio nage's. My buddy Andrew from home was my partner and we were seeing just how much we could elevate and slam each other. Good times. After class we rolled with all of their guys, the most experienced having about four months of training. So we took it easy and helped them up their skillz so that next time maybe we could battle a little bit. All in all it was a beautiful drive to a HOT desert town (just my style), wherein we hung out with kind folks and shared a little jiu jitsu. This pic was taken at the bitter end after most of their students had left but it's still a good one:

Put anything related to BJJ, especially YOUR BJJ in this thread.

I have been thinking about making this thread for a while, I actually have a doc with a start of it from a while ago.

I would like to buy a blue gi one of these days, I can't see spending the extra $$$ just for some color though.

I still can't find an A2 gi in stock anywhere that is reasonably priced and isn't covered with a bunch of fucking patches and shit.
Also: ribs still fucked, although I can almost breathe now!

That's how my boy Yuki made his belt purple. I mean he earnt it of course but there was a belt shortage so he did it OG style.

Also I have a blog. It's purely technical and all of the 16 posts are written entirely in first person but hey, maybe it'll be useful to others as well. http://d-dayjiujitsu.blogspot.com/

Right now I'm just protecting my tattoo so I should be good to go again next week. YES!

Holy shit Josh, I see they want $120 for a Howard now? Jeez, that was the one brand you could count on for a bulletproof gi at a bargain. Anyhow I hope I'm finding new stuff with these links:

It's not like I checked availability of A2 but since I had never seen any of those sites before I thought maybe you hadn't either.

I will have to start attending Friday gi class, but before I do that I should probably buy a gi.

My right arm is healing surprisingly quickly, still a little tender, though now it is bruised up and down like all hell. I should not have worn a short sleeve shirt to work today because I think I scared the shit out of some people.

You'll find that most elbow pops don't amount much besides a few days of mild pain. However this last shit that happened to mine was pretty bad. It'll have been about six weeks of down time before I officially retake the mat.

Anyhow here's a couple of grappling resources:

Takedowns 101 These guys have a website but their myspace blog is where it's really at. If you have a myspace make these dudes your friend. You'll see.

http://www.aesopian.com/ This is the best technical resource I know of. Srsly. And the dude trains at Gracie Barra Tampa with Eduardo de Lima so you know his skills is tight.

Also, I know that some people are still under the impression that BJJ and MMA = same thing. And although I've posted this video elsewhere I feel the need to post the Jacare highlight again so people can understand that jiu jitsu is its own sport, practiced for its own ends.

this annoys me as much as the people that think any type of mma is the UFC. i can't tell you how many times people in my area talk about the cage fighting in Cleveland and say they "know somebody who fights UFC".

What about the number of times some chump has introduced me to one of his chump friends as "an ultimate fighter". Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeh.

This is probably taking the thread off topic but The Fox and Hound was packed with 50% tight Affliction shirts and 25% too small polos and popped collars for last weekends fights. I used to think wrestling crowds were bad.

Oh this MMA fad is totally annoying. Great sport in the ring/cage (it's what brought me to jiu jitsu so HAY). Lame as the lamest thing ever could be out in public.
