Thread: TNL Bicycles Volume I: Wild And Wacky Action Bike

  1. lol @ fixed gear trend hoars.

Unless you are jumping huge shit or doing flatland, put gears on your bike.

  2. It's all about seeing what i can do with my bike to make it completely different from the bike i bought. If i get something and i can mod it without spending a ton of money, i'm going to do it. I keep reading about how great fixies are and i'm curious if the whole direct drive feels all that different. My bike has an internal 3-speed hub, so it looks like a one-speed. Doing it for looks would be silly.

Anyways, Finch, don't sweat the weight. It's not rotational and isn't gonna make much difference in your ride quality overall. I wouldn't put the 700's on though, as you obviously set it up to carry cargo and I'm guessing you're talking about doing a suicide swap?
I wanted the variety available with the 700cc rims and tires, plus the lower rolling resistance. I also wanted something i could switch out if i just didn't like it at all. Weight isn't something i'm worried about, my bike is still pretty light even with the basket and rack.
Would a suicide swap work? I'm curious if i could just remove the freewheel and put a track cog on the internal gear hub or if that's just a bat-shit crazy idea. An internet search pulled up nothing.
There's an old road bike at work that has perfect horizontal drop-outs. It's been in storage since i started working there last year. I should really just try to buy that off of whoever owns it and set that up as a fixie.

Yeah, that's basically what a suicide swap is. People do it all the time. I sure as hell wouldn't, though: while I've never heard of it failing, I'd want two thread sets holding that hub and not just the one (hence the name), and you're halfway to buying a fixed wheel as it is. You'd also have to do a little more work getting your chainline right.
To boldly go where lots of men have gone before...

  4. Anyone that rides a Cannondale fucking rocks IMO. I thought I was the only one that had one. I'm so tempted to get a new one. Nothing wrong with the one I have but its a hardtail. You can get a decent full suspension now for $1000-$1500.

Cannondale has sold one bike and it was to you.

Also, unless a person is old and brokedown or is bombing huge shit (which I require photographic evidence) then it is hardtail for life!

  6. We've actually got a lot of Cannondales on campus, I was sort of surprised. There's no retailer around here or anything that I ever saw so it's a bit confusing.

My friend from high school that I keep in touch with about bikes and neuroscience is on a college cycling team (mountain/cyclocross, not road). She's diehard Cannondale.

I use to think that about hardtails too but the new full suspension bikes really don't weigh much more and the rear suspension shocks are incredible now. Plus with being able to turn them off they kinda kick all kinds of ass. I do plenty of trail riding is the nicer months so .

Yeah, it wouldn't be that awful expensive to pick up a new hub and rim. Any recommendations on a good non-Phil-Wood-expensive hub and rim? There's a $135 fixed-fixed hub w/ wheel and cogs at the bike shop i don't like to visit. I don't know if there are things i should avoid or if a cheap wheel will serve me fine, or if i could build something decent myself for less money. I'll keep the old wheel and hub until the S3X is available (if i'm not over fixies gears by then).

  10. Oh man, building my own wheel involves expensive tools!

Well... i could build something neat and it'd be a great sense of accomplishment. but... i'm more than likely not going to be building more than 1 or 2 wheels.
