Thread: What Are You Playing? - August 2008

Metroid Prime's a good game with amazing atmosphere but there's just too much filler for it to deserve ranking high on top 100 lists like it is. Backtracking isn't a flaw in games like Super Metroid because the length is short but in long games like Prime, it drags the quality down a bit as do dated controls. Whatever criteria you use, there are better Metroid games, better first-person shooters, and better action-adventures out there.

I hope you're being sarcastic here. Why don't you have component cables for your Wii?

The backtracking in Prime, didn't seem much different than that of Super Metroid.

  5. I've been trying like hell to play Parasite Eve 2 this past week, but it's not happening. The restrictive inventory management that made survival horror games of its error so intense goes completely out the window thanks to regenerating MP and unlimited ammo boxes placed all over the place. What a piece of shit.

Braid, on the other hand, is pretty much the best game ever.

  6. I started up Landstalker. I like the weird noise everything makes when you slash it. Perspective is doof but not yet ultradoof.

  7. Yeah, I enjoyed Metroid Prime 1 because at least it was interesting to see how they decided to incorporate all the 2D Metroid weapons and stuff in a 3D FPS-way. Metroid Prime 2 couldn't keep my interest for a half-hour. Neither could 3. I just don't particularly like the level design and the combat isn't really satisfying.

I've been playing a bunch of downloadable games. Schizoid for the 360 is awesome, one of the best co-op games I've ever played. Player Red flies into the red enemies that hurt player Blue, and vice versa, and that's it, but the level design is constantly mixing things up as are the continual new enemies and patterns of them. Great game for $10.

Carcassone for the 360 is really fun. It's a turn-based tile-placing board-game where you claim and build castles, roads, agriculture, and so on. "So, when do we fight?" my friend asks. Once you get past the fact that there is none, you realize how deep the actual game is. I like it a lot. It's kind of nice to be assisted by the computer in knowing where you can place a tile and so on. Good for chilling out with friends.

In the same vein I tried Civilization Revolutions or whatever it's called for the 360. I didn't complete a whole game. It's actually my first Civ game ever. It's pretty decent I guess but I just don't have the patience to play by myself, at least.

Also got pretty far in Lost Winds on Wii. Pretty cool game. I like the control and the Metroidvania-style overworld map and power ups. I just wish the "dungeons" were actually more ambitious and it would be awesome if there were bosses or something.

Nobody I know owns a PS3, and apparently there's no business out there making a profit on renting game consoles anymore, so I'm not playing MGS4 anytime soon. But I did pop in MGS3 just to spur up some memories. There's definitely a lot of cinema scenes in the game, especially at the beginning, but it's all so well done that it just sucks me in. Forgot all about the "R1" camera view change button. Heh heh.

Picked up Mega Man ZX: Advent for the DS a couple of weeks ago. Really cool Mega Man game. I didn't play the first ZX or Zero but I'm loving the Metroid style map and the transformations, even though some of 'em are kinda lame. I like using the touchpad to switch though and the map is also useful. The game is pretty challenging, I'm probably only about halfway. I like it a lot!

And Worms in high-def for the 360. Man, this game could be so much more. It's a solid version of Worms, but very bare bones. It's got the basics: bazooka, grenades, sheep, banana bomb, rope, airstrike, blowtorch, etc, but it's missing all the really fun stuff like Holy Hand Grenades, Homing Pigeons, Old Ladies, Super Sheep... and it really isn't all that customizable. You can only have four teams max with four worms max. Nonetheless it's still awesome cause it's Worms and it's in the living room. But it could be so much more.

  8. I ran those "karterkarners" through babelfish and it got me "Family computer wars". I know, right? Well, seeing as these karterkarners seem to incite rage into the hearts of men, I think I'll just use those little Latin letters from now on.

Switched to Gameboy Wars for the time being, even though I hate Military Madness in general. Fuck honeycombs.
Still not thinking right? Then it isn't working.

  9. Anyone rocking out to Geometry Wars 2? That game is hard as shit, but so addictive.

Edit: Check that. I see Rumpy, KOF, and Cowdisease are also gluttons for punishment. That game is so much fun. Anyone having any luck beating Josh's 75M points in Pacifism?

  10. Check the GW2 thread. Firstblood got over 200,000 million in Pacifism. I wish there was a way to check scores online.
