Thread: What Are You Playing? - August 2008

  1. Mario Kart Advance/Super Circuit (GBA) - my favorite Kart racer with only Crash Team Racing coming close.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (PS2) - I also own the DC version but I got an import PS2 version for only $9.99 (plus shippping)

I was thinking of buying N+ too. Unfortunately I found out about the Mac version they released for free so I'll probably play through those first while at work.

All of these XBLA games I'm catching up with are taking all of my free time away

Some more shit I have been playing:

Bangai-O Spirits - Maybe I'm just in a different mood than several years ago but I'm liking this more than the original so far. It's retro-inspired but it seems much fresher than the disappointing sequels to Gunstar and Guardian Heroes.

TimeShift - I thought the demo was great last year, and finally picked it up cheap. It's not a top tier FPS but it's not that far off either. The time manipulation is really cool and keeps it from feeling like a Black clone.

Advent Rising - I picked up the Xbox version for $3 at EB. I'm not sure what to make of it yet. It's a little goofy looking and floaty but I'm liking the fast pace. I can picture the simple lock on-heavy action wearing thin, though.

I always assumed it wouldn't be my kind of game, for whatever reason, but lord does it rule. There's something really satisfying about the stalking around, the pistol's head shots, the rocket equipped jeep fights, all of it. And I've been very much in an FPS mood lately.
When you finish it, throw this at it. Not finished yet (only 3 levels) but good for what it is. Pushes Crytex 1.0 to it's limits.

  5. Braid - Really awesome game, artistically and technically speaking. I'm surprised it's engine is strong enough to let you record to the very beginning of the level, even if 8 or 9 minutes have passed by. Sure cost a lot to make, but still good fun. Might try and finish it with all the pieces this morning before going out for brunch with the lady and friends.

FFTA2: Grimoire of the Rift - I bought this the day it came out, ignored it and am only rushing through it since my friend just got it and is 97 quests deep. I must destroy him...So far! Six...

Geometry Wars: Evolved 2 - 200/200 Achievements, houu yeah! Now it's just playing for actual fun. Honestly though, the achievements were some of the most fun I've played in a game. It almost feels as if it was solely made for those trials. Great game, surely going to last me a very long time.

Bionic Commando: ReArmed - Played this co-op, thought it was terrible. And not really feeling it right now, so I'll give it a rest until I'm ready.

Soul Calibur IV - Xianghua: "Yoosh! Itadaki!!!! Game is sweet, even with all the ridiculous physics engine cupped (ha!) around boobs and cellulite combined. Looks great, plays pretty good, but waking up from the ground seems slower than in 2 or 3. Still, tons of fun and the lag is starting to go away in online matches. Relief! Halfway through the Tower of Souls so far.

And man, the voices are really bad in English. I usually prefer keeping voices to English even if it's a J-game since I find English far superior, but even my friends who don't adhere to Japanese games switched it off. It's not painful, just kind of questionable.

Ninja Gaiden II - Playing the DLC. I don't know why I bought it, but honestly in my humble opinion it's exactly what I would have wanted in the first place from the game. Simple quick missions of just fighting. The original standalone copy of NG2 crams enemies at you at every corner, I know, but I always an area or two where enemies just keep spawning relentlessly that I could pick up and play for two-three minutes.

Only played it for 5-10 minutes after purchasing it this week. Have some 20 missions left to do before I can call it a day.

  6. I was playing BF: Bad Company, but I returned that POS game.

  8. im about to make my second attempt at dead rising, but this game frustrated me so much the first time (because i wanted to save everyone, i missed one psycho because of it, and those god damn psychos in the military jeep respawning, assholes...)

  10. I've barely played any games at all this summer. I play Street Fighter Alpha 3 on my GBA whenever I have to entertain myself on long bus/train rides, but other than that, all I've played are the occasional emulated arcade game and some DC Soul Calibur.
