Thread: Need help selecting an external HD

  1. Need help selecting an external HD

I want to get an external HD and I need it because I'm finally converting all of my old home movies that are still on VHS and Hi-8. I was looking on NewEgg and saw a bunch but I want to make sure the one I get is reliable.

Just out of personal experience, I am very happy with Western Digital and their My Book series. I've never used any other external drives, but then again, I've never had to.

Have you had it for a while? That was the first one I was looking at but some of the user reviews claim that after a few weeks/months they don't turn on.

  4. Buffalo 500g. No problems whatsoever.

  5. Wheather you get an enclosure and put your own drive in, or one already together you want to make sure you get one with it's own power supply to minimize premature death.

  6. I've got 2 Western Digital My Book external drives (500 & 250). I've had the 250 GB one for almost 3 years now and I've never had a problem with it and I got the 500 GB one for x-mas last year and it's worked perfect for me since. I've also got one of their passport drives and I love it too.

  7. Lot of porn?

  8. Yes, and tons of music and TV/movies.

I've also got a 120 gig iomega that's almost 5 years old and it's still kickin.

I have a 250gb from about 2 years ago, and it has amazingly been working fine since. Even took a couple of falls from my tower to the desk while running and still works without a problem. I also have 500gb and 1tb studio edtions from this past december and they have yet to have seen any problems.

  10. I'm a fan of the Western Digital 500g drives. I've also got a Maxor 250g from college, it's still kickin'.
