It's extremely hard to get private information out of many businesses in Canada because of the information privacy act put up 10 or so years ago. It's actually illegal for your employer to hand out ANY information about you to people just asking without a signed and expressed permission form from you allowing it.
I think U of T got hammered with a small lawsuit a couple of years ago about improper disclosure (and I believe it was a technicality that caught their balls, too, they weren't really in the wrong) so they're being hard assed about everything since.
